Feasale: Dressing Like a Leader

It’s a Communication Skill

Correct dress and embellishment is a communication skill worth consideration. If we use our heads, our clothing choices can send the important messages we intend. Upon sight the first two messages our dress sends is where we “fit in” or where we “belong.” Depending on the type of work we do, our choice of wardrobe can vary widely from profession to profession. What an associate wears reflects the kind of service the company esteems. For example, PR, Publishing and Advertising companies are generally more lax on formal dress, and a little more open to stylish, expressive taste. What does this communicate to their clientele? It tells clients that daring individuals, willing to push the limits of creative expression and design, represent them.

This is after all, what they are there for. In the technology workplace, you may find the sensibility is a little different. In this type of work environment you might see the support staff wearing t-shirts, jeans, edgy hairstyles, piercings, maybe showing a little ink and sporting an over all relaxed appeal. This type of style communicates intelligence but also communicates indifference to surface issues. However, would you expect someone to show up for a high level meeting with the CEO at a large company wearing the types of clothing I described above? No. To be perceived as a leader both internally and externally requires a certain careful and polished manner of dress. The dress of a leader sends important signals. It communicates that someone is ready for serious business, strength and, frankly, to succeed.

You may already be at the top of the food chain or still reaching for your goals. Regardless of your point of progress, your work wardrobe speaks loudly about your leadership qualities. Here are some wardrobe tips fit for a Leader:

  • Express the effort you put into your work, in your clothing too. You don’t have to be a walking fashion show but keeping your work wardrobe up-to-date is essential. As a leader, you represent your company, so looking well put together and polished shows that you take an interest in both your appearance and your company’s appearance.
  • Invest your wardrobe money in quality items. Buying quality over quantity will make certain you always look sharp. Quality pieces are pieces you truly love. A well-fitted suit, well-made shoes and an elegant watch, won’t age or tarnish like cheap faddish clothing. You can wear them season after season, and still be sharp.

  • Don’t be afraid to take some wardrobe risks. By “risk” we are not suggesting you wear cosmic disco tights to work, but you can boost your mood and confidence levels by adding some individuality to your wardrobe. Ladies, try adding a belt, an eye-catching neck piece or some cute heels you love. Fellas, try experimenting with colors by swapping traditional white, blue and black for this seasons garnets.

  • Look sharp but be approachable. Leadership is not about standing alone. It’s important to be approachable amongst your peers. Not being so will leave you out of touch. If you are looking especially sharp or stylish one day, try teaming this look with a more casual hairstyle and a neutral make-up palette for the ladies. The aim is to look neat but not overly dressed and detached or unfriendly.

  • Pay attention to your grooming. Being groomed well will get you a lot further towards your goals and in your career field. You should be sure to make regular appointments to keep your hair done and hands manicured.

Bottom line, we want to make a statement when we walk into a room, before we even speak. This can go a number of ways depending on how we are carrying ourselves. So ask yourself, what statement are you making with your dress, grooming and adornment?
